Success Story

Business Name: Rich Davis Enterprises, Inc.

Owner: Melissa Davis-Matsos

Melissa Matsos is being groomed to take over for her mom as the second generation owner of Rich Davis Enterprises, Inc. Started in 1983 by her father, Melissa has always worked in the day to day operations. Her mother encouraged Melissa to work on ways to grow the company. Melissa researched and found the federal Women Owned Small Business and women’s business enterprise certification programs. She knew that this was something Rich Davis Enterprises Inc. had to do right away, but had no idea how to go about it. This is when she contacted Deb Loeser, Program Manager for the Women’s Business Center. Loeser counseled Matsos and took her under her wing for the year.

One of the first things they worked on were marketing materials, such as a capabilities statement that Melissa could use for match maker events. Loeser also helped Melissa understand the value proposition of certification for corporations, which are key customers for Rich Davis Enterprises.

Deb Loeser played an integral role in Melissa attending the Leadership Institute for Women – Leading into the Future. She found it both inspiring and now understands the importance of having the right staff and team in order to grow revenues and profits.

Another opportunity that Loeser thought was a great fit for Melissa was the Goldman Sachs 10K Small Businesses Detroit Initiative. This highly competitive program offers world-class business education in areas of management, operations and technical assistance. Melissa was accepted and it was a life changing experience for her. She came out of the program with more confidence, better understanding of her financials and meaningful peer relationships.

Melissa now regularly puts into practice everything she has learned over the past year. After discovering a decrease in business from a longtime customer, Melissa was proactive and spoke with the customer directly. She discovered that the client wanted to implement new technology with their drivers, which included a free app that tracks the driver, truck and the customer load. With this critical information, Melissa was able to install the app and save a $500,000 account for their business.

Melissa is very grateful for the investment of time, counseling and encouragement that the Women’s Business Center provided her throughout this past year.
